Self-test for Codependency

The following questions are designed for use merely as guidelines for identifying possible signs of codependency. They are not intended as a substitute for clinical diagnosis. Patterns can vary from individual to individual, so negative answers do not necessarily denote the absence of a problem.

1. Do you keep quiet in order to avoid arguments?

2. Are you always worried about what other people think of you?

3. Have you ever lived with somebody who has problems with addiction (alcohol, drugs or other) or a psychological disorder?

4. Have you ever lived with somebody who belittles or hits you?

5. Do you feel the opinions of others are more important than your own?

6. Do you have difficulty adjusting to changes at work or at home?

7. Do you feel rejected if your significant others spend time with friends?

8. Do you lack confidence to be who you want to be?

9. Are you uncomfortable expressing your true feelings?

10. Have you ever had feelings of inadequacy?

11. Do you feel ashamed when you make a mistake?

12. Do you have difficulty accepting compliments or gifts?

13. Do you feel humiliated when your partner or your child makes a mistake?

14. Do you think people in your life would go downhill without your constant efforts?

15. Do you frequently wish someone would help you get things done?

16. Do you have difficulty speaking to people in authority?

17. Are you confused about who you are and where you are going in life?
